FOCUS ON EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT |
The Future Cost of Low Employee Engagement |
Low turnover in today's labor market doesn't necessarily reflect a healthy workplace culture—it may simply mean employees feel too uncertain about the economy to leave. This distinction matters from a corporate citizenship standpoint: about a third of employees report feeling disrespected by their managers, and over half say they can't be authentic at work, suggesting a disconnect between how companies present themselves publicly and how employees experience day-to-day life internally. Management quality plays a large role in this dynamic, since managers account for most of the variation in whether employees feel valued and engaged. The growing use of AI adds another layer, as productivity gains don't automatically translate into stronger collaboration or trust.

Net Zero School Stays Cool and Open During Heatwave |
Buntingford First School in Hertfordshire has become the first school in England to achieve net-zero in both construction and operation, earning certification from the Passivhaus Trust. With north-facing classrooms, triple glazing, an air source heat pump, and 184 solar panels, the school stayed cool and open even as June's heatwave forced over 1,000 other schools across England and Wales to close. Its laminated timber frame significantly reduced the building’s embodied carbon compared with traditional construction materials, while its airtight design keeps energy use low year-round.
One student on the school's eco committee said that, compared with her previous school, she appreciates being able to support the environment simply by attending classes.
The project offers a clear lesson for corporations: sustainable infrastructure is not only good for the planet but can also strengthen business resilience. By designing for future climate conditions—the architects tested the building against projected 2070 weather patterns—Buntingford avoided the costly disruptions associated with extreme heat, including closures and lost productivity. For companies weighing the upfront costs of green construction against its long-term benefits, this project demonstrates how sustainable design can help keep operations running as climate-related disruptions become more frequent.

Point32Health Foundation Releases New Report on Trust-Based Philanthropy |
Flexible funding, measurable impact: Learning about trust-based philanthropy and systems change shares what is possible for organizations and the communities they serve when we employ trust-based practices and values. The report highlights six core findings: - Flexible funding enables adaptability and defense-oriented strategies in a highly volatile context.
-
The Foundation’s trust-based practices are “impact enablers” to advance grantees’ missions.
- Community voice is a strategic lever to improve outcomes.
- Systems change is being advanced by building relationships, strengthening infrastructure and shifting mindsets, narratives, and norms.
- Communities experience direct improvements as a result of grantees’ work.
-
The Foundation’s flexible funding helps unlock additional resources, especially when flexible dollars serve as bridge funding, matches, or credibility signals.
The Foundation hopes to dispel the myth that general operating support and accountability are at odds with one another. This report shows that reporting and evaluation are still possible within a Trust-Based approach without placing undo burden on nonprofits.
